#Bridal Hunger Games, Losing Weight in Time for the #Wedding (Medical Supervised Weight Loss?) #nurseup #nursefriendly

February 15, 2013 in Health, Healthcare

#Bridal Hunger Games, Losing Weight in Time for the #Wedding (Medical Supervised Weight Loss?) #nurseup #nursefriendly:”In March, Jessica Schnaider, 41, of Surfside, Fla., was preparing to shop for a wedding gown by spending eight days on a feeding tube. The diet, under a doctor’s supervision, offered 800 calories a day while she went about her business, with a tube in her nose.
A 2007 Cornell University study by Lori Neighbors and Jeffery Sobal found that 70 percent of 272 engaged women said they wanted to lose weight, typically 20 pounds. So brides are increasingly going on crash diets, inspired by seeing celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker or Gwyneth Paltrow, cowed by the prospect of wearing a revealing and expensive gown and knowing that wedding photos (if not the marriage) are forever.”

A Patient Is Rescued, Quietly, @theresabrown, #oncology #nursing #nurses #nursefriendly #nurseup

A Patient Is Rescued, Quietly, @theresabrown, #oncology #nursing #nurses #nursefriendly:”A real-life hospital emergency tends to be less obviously dramatic — and much more scary. A few weeks ago I had a patient in significant distress. This is the story of how we saved him.

He’d been admitted for a scheduled cancer treatment called a biological response modifier. The name matters only because we consider this class of treatments “hard drugs,” meaning they are very, very toxic. These types of drugs make patients feel so terrible that often after one round, they refuse further doses even when there are no other treatment options.”

15 #Healthcare Twitter Hashtags you should follow #nursefriendly #healthcare #patients #nurseup

January 1, 2013 in Health

15 healthcare Twitter hashtags you should follow #nursefriendly #healthcare #patients #rnchat:”Hashtags help facilitate conversations on the popular social media platform, help other users discover what discussion topics are trending and are an extremely useful tool in focusing on information that’s important while excluding what isn’t.
But some complain that the hashtag is misused and misunderstood.
The hashtag is incredibly important as it is the sole way of providing context to the content you are posting,” said Quora user Mike Vosters. However, it is subject to criticism as a large portion of Twitter users are not educated on its true purpose, and use it as a sort of punchline at the end of their tweet.”

Hospice being marketed as a cost-cutter for hospitals, USA Today, #nurseup #nursefriendly #hospice #eolchat

May 29, 2012 in Disease, Health, Healthcare, Hospitals & Healthcare Systems, Informed Patient Choices, Making All Treatment Options Known To Patient

NurseFriendly posted an update 1 minute ago

Hospice being marketed as a cost-cutter for hospitals, USAToday, #nurseup #nursefriendly #hospice #eolchat:”By Kelly Kennedy, USA TODAY:”Hospice marketers, exploring possibilities for new revenue to help continue the industry’s remarkable growth, are looking to exploit a provision in the 2010 health care law by persuading hospitals to send Medicare patients into end-of-life hospice care instead of readmitting them to the hospital.
Such a move, the hospice marketers say, will enable hospitals to avoid paying the Medicare penalties required by the new law when hospitals discharge patients and then have to readmit them within 30 days: Instead of readmitting the patients, hospitals should send them to hospice care, which also is covered by Medicare, according to a USA TODAY analysis of marketing materials.
Patients with severe heart problems and pneumonia tend to decline quickly and often move in and out of hospitals, said hospice marketing specialist Rich Chesney, who proposed the idea.”

Cautions Regarding Alternative Medical Treatment, by Pat Iyer @avoidmederrors #nurseup #nursefriendly

Parents need to use good judgment when considering the use of alternative medicine and health treatments for their children. Denying the child the benefits of proven conventional medicine may be harmful. Treating children with alternative medicines can be dangerous and may even lead to death, researchers have warned.

Some parents misguidedly believe that complementary remedies are “more natural” than conventional drugs, and leave children with fewer side effects, said the Australian researchers. Writing in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, they warned that children receiving these treatments could experience adverse reactions. They studied data compiled in the Australian Pediatric Surveillance Unit between 2001 and 2003. During that time, 39 separate incidents occurred involving side effects relating to complementary medicine treatment given to children, including four deaths.

Effects on the children, who were aged from babies to 16-year-olds, were rated from mild to severe. There were 25 cases (64 per cent) that were considered to be severe, life-threatening or fatal.

Alternative medication given to children may be dangerous

In 30 cases (77 per cent), the issues were “probably or definitely” related to complementary medicine, and in 17 (44 per cent) the patient was regarded as being harmed by a failure to use conventional medicine.

All four deaths resulted from a failure to use conventional treatments, the reports showed. Read more

Note that adults who use of alternative, unproven medication may also be putting their health in jeopardy.

Lori ‘Minky’ Radcliffe, RN, BS, CFNC, CFPC, Founder of Certified Fitness Nurse™ Academy, @loriminkyrad:”At CertifiedFitnessNurseCoach.com we are not personal trainers who happen to be nurses. We show nurses how to stay in the health care industry and promote exercise within a ‘not-so-healthy’ pre-diabetic population;and NOT try to be a nurse in the fitness ‘percieved healthy’ industry. Just as waist reduction is 20% exercise and 80% diet; Certified Fitness Nurse™ Coaches are 20% fitness and 80% nursing in our practice. We teach a physical-environmental-financial-social-emotional model… like a nursing assessment.

We offer a 23-hour certification course for nurses who are fitness enthusiasts, who want to help pre-diabetics, with a specifically designed program for them, that will improve their health and reduce their waists in a sustainable manner. This is done through a 12-week group coaching course via the computer, video and telephone. We also teach you how to get started with only a few clients working part-time, from home and making full time money in a scalable business model. The physician and other health care professionals are actually where we get our clients and we utilize a fitness nursing assessment to determine the right minimum effective dose (M.E.D.) of diet, exercise and supplementation, the right client and the right time, which are the 3 Rights of a Certified Fitness Nurse™ Coach.”

Should You Incorporate Your Registry Business? By Joseph Caracci, RN:”The short answer is yes! When starting a new nurse registry business, you are entering into a legal business environment that requires you to take steps to protect your personal assets, such as your home, your savings, and your retirement. With this in mind, you need to determine which legal form you are going to take for your new registry. Some of the common choices are a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a limited liability partnership (LLP), a limited liability company (LLC), and a corporation.”

Elaine Gaither, RN, Energy From Within, LLC:”Elaine has years of experience in adolescent psychiatric nursing, Youth Ministry, and wellness coaching. However, her most rewarding role is being a Mom to her two sons, Andy age 25 and Tony age 20. To say that she comes from a “been there done that perspective” is an understatement. During the challenging times, she remembered to implement the healing powers of humor, creativity and play. Elaine has learned the value of being open, being flexible and seeing things in a new perspective. Her humor allows her to reframe situations in a positive light and the ability to step aside from situations into a larger context of lessons and opportunities.”

Amber Keinath, Registered Nurse and Health Coach:”Amber is a Registered Nurse and Health Coach who is very passionate about educating and inspiring women to be healthy for life. She started her nursing career working in the medical, postpartum & newborn, and pediatric specialties in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Amber continued her education by completing her Master’s Degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Wellness Promotion and becoming certified as a Health Coach. From Hospital Nurse to Health Coach: During Amber’s nursing career, she began to question her ability to help people in the hospital. She witnessed many people get discharged from the hospital with more medications only to wind up readmitted a few days later. People were not getting healthier despite all the care provided. She felt there was a better way to help these people.”

Are EMRs Killing the Clinical Narrative? #nurseup

March 26, 2012 in Health

Original URL:
Click here to find out more!

“I have a feeling ‘Don’t recertify patient to fly without this procedure’ is not a check box that is easy to put into this medical record,” Resnik says.

Symptoms also change over time, and EMRs may not be nearly as good as a narrative when expressing this.

On top of all these concerns, a generation of older clinicians who are used to simply narrating their records creates a recipe for a mass exodus of personnel on top of growing doctor shortages.

Resnik worries that with the current stampede to meaningful use, all these considerations are being ignored.

As somewhat of a salvation, work continues on natural language processing. Resnik, who consults in this field, notes that machines are making strikes in learning to read, parse, and code narratives, partly because of the recent move to “big data” and advances in machine learning such as IBM’s Watson project.
